Product warranty – the underutilized tool to uncover Quality, Reliability and Business values in your organization

This presentation will show how the engineering and business analysis of warranty data can provide the key information to evaluate the product’s quality and reliability and drive the necessary design improvements. It will also cover the business aspects of handling warranty including the role of supply chain management and the overall effect on the company’s bottom line.

Program Speaker:
Andre Kleyner has 30 years of engineering, research, consulting, and managerial experience specializing in reliability of electronic and mechanical systems designed to operate in severe environments. He received the doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from University of Maryland, and Master of Business Administration from Ball State University. Dr. Kleyner is Global Reliability Engineering Leader with Delphi Electronics & Safety and an adjunct professor at Purdue University. He is an ASQ Fellow, a CRE, CQE, and Six Sigma Black Belt. He also holds several US and foreign patents and authored multiple professional publications including three books on the topics of reliability, statistics, warranty management, and lifecycle cost analysis. Andre Kleyner is also the editor of the Wiley book Series in Quality and Reliability Engineering published by John Wiley & Sons.

In the quality profession, we are trained that the essence of quality is meeting or exceeding customer requirements. And who should know more about customer requirements than customers? So all we have to do is ask them what they want or need, right? This presentation will explain why that may not always be true, and what you can do to try to ensure you learn what customers really need.

Program Speaker:
Harry Rowe spent almost forty years working for a Fortune 100 manufacturing company, with assignments in Engineering and Construction, Computer Systems, R&D, Quality, and Product Development in businesses ranging from alumina refining and aluminum smelting to aluminum and plastic packaging to custom engineer-to-order machinery. After retiring, he founded Rowe Quality Services, hoping to help small and medium businesses improve their bottom lines by improving product and service quality and process performance. He has served as the Voice of the Customer Chair for ASQ Section 0903 in Indianapolis since 2011. He was a member of ASQ’s Voice of the Customer Committee from January 2013 and its Chair from January 2015 until stepping down from the Committee in August 2016. He is an ASQ Certified Manager of Quality and Organizational Excellence. Harry holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He resides in Indianapolis with his wife Susie.

This presentation is very controversial, as it destroys the myth of the normal curve in precision machining! It goes into the correct distribution, and the proper setup of control charts that allow absolute control of the process! It covers how Cpk’s cannot be calculated for precision diameters and lengths – because the distribution is non-normal (see AIAG PPAP 4th edition 2.2.11.5, NOTE), and how compressing control limits increases variation, and is not continuous improvement! It sounds like blasphemy, but it is all true – and once you see the facts, it is impossible to argue!

BOB DOERING has been in the quality field for over 20 years. He is currently a quality engineer for an automotive component manufacturing firm, as well as a consultant in SPC, Metrology and Quality Concepts training. He holds associates degrees from Lorain County Community College of Elyria, Ohio and The University of Akron of Akron, Ohio; BA in Business and MBA in Systems Management from Baldwin-Wallace College, Berea, Ohio.

DEBORAH HOPEN, Deborah has over 40 years of experience in total quality management. She has served as a senior executive with both Fortune and Inc 500 companies. Her varied experience includes time spent in general management, quality assurance and quality control, training, human resources, organization development, research and development, process engineering, and accounting.
From July 1995 through June 1997, she served as President and Chairman of the American Society for Quality. She also has served as President of the Washington State Quality Award Program and the International Standards Initiative, as well as being involved as a leader with numerous Washington State cultural and charitable organizations. Hopen is a Fellow of ASQ and is the editor of ASQ’s Journal for Quality and Participation.
In 2015, she was recognized with the Asia Pacific Quality Organization’s Miflora M. Gatchalian Medal for Women in Global Quality Leadership. She was a 2014 recipient of the ASQ Distinguished Service Medal. In 2011 she received ASQ’s Gryna Award, its Quality Management Division’s Roger Berger Spirit Award, and its Los Angeles Section’s Simon Collier Award. She also received the APQC C. Jackson Grayson Distinguished Pioneer of Quality Award in 2012.
In addition to being the author of more than 200 publications and presentations, she has taught statistics and statistical process control, quality management, production management, and production costing at the university level. She has a B.S. in Applied Science. Since then she has completed advanced studies in business administration, industrial and clinical psychology, and operations research. She was a Certified Quality Engineer for over 15 years and is recognized as a LSS Master Black Belt. Her consulting list includes clients from the manufacturing, service, military, government, healthcare, education, and not-for-profit sectors.

Sometimes all we need is a twist to our outlook to make a difference, to reach a new level of commitment to improvement. Rather than focus on a single topic, this fast moving talk engages participants by asking them to listen and think. The slides are limited, to allow freer thinking. Participants choose the very order of (up to) 16 subjects based on visual hints, avoiding the usual ‘death by PowerPoint’ scenario.
This talk is a creative attempt to look at where we are and how we got here. Where may we go if we take hold of our future and make something of it?

Topic Description:
Potential Failure Mode and Effects Analysis, or the FMEA, is a popular risk assessment tool used to manage potential risk in processes and designs. Not surprisingly, there may be failure modes associated with the activity of conducting an FMEA. Accurate results require accurate input rankings; however, complete and accurate information is not always available. When FMEA input rankings are based on collective intelligence that are skill-based and/or sometimes subjective, there needs to be a method of assessing the sensitivity of prioritized risk values associated with ranking uncertainty. This presentation will describe several potential failure modes associated with the activity of conducting an FMEA along with a simple method to assess the sensitivity of the Risk Priority Number to input rankings.
Learning Objectives:
• Learn potential failure modes associated with conducting the FMEA
• Understand why some RPN values are more sensitive to error than others
• Learn how to perform sensitivity analysis of RPN values for better decision making
• Learn how to update the standard FMEA template in order to measure marginal risk values


Program Speaker:
Eugene Bukowski is a senior engineering manager at General Electric Healthcare, Ambassador Medical in Noblesville, Indiana. His engineering team is responsible for the compliant refurbishment of ultrasound medical devices. Bukowski has more than 30 years of combined experience in the computer, automotive, health insurance, healthcare and management consulting industries, including IBM, General Motors, United Healthcare, the George Group, and Accenture. His industry experience includes functional assignments in product design and development, engineering management, large computer system sales and marketing, marketing strategy and business intelligence, finance capital management, corporate quality and continuous improvement, operations excellence, and business transformation. He is a Senior member of the ASQ, a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt and a Shainin® Red X® Master. He has a degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University, a master’s degree in electrical engineering from Duke University, and a degree in manufacturing management from Kettering University. Bukowski has published 10 inventions, six of which were awarded patents.

Supplier relationships are pivotal challenges for every organization. This holds for traditional manufacturing suppliers, and also for emerging suppliers of Cloud Computing, mobile devices, and other new technologies. Quality Assurance provides a host of approaches for traditional suppliers. But what if we are asked to cover suppliers of newer technologies? Do we have to start from scratch? It is a completely new game? No, not in the least. Many Quality Assurance approaches, controls, and solutions for traditional suppliers bridge time and technology. We are in better shape than we think. During this workshop Bob Eisenhut, a Quality Assurance professional in both traditional and emerging technologies, will look at both paradigms. He will show similarities, differences, points of synergy, and risk areas. Participants will get a chance for hands on work scenarios to engage directly in this activity. Anyone currently interested in supplier relationships who want to see connections to emerging technologies will be interested in this session.

Program Speaker:
Bob Eisenhut has 30 years of professional experience and has been an ASQ Certified Quality Engineer over 20 years. He has worked in various industries including manufacturing, airlines, advertising, software development, health care, and medical devices. His quality assurance work includes both quality engineering and software quality assurance. Bob has a BS in Mathematics and MS in Industrial Engineering from Purdue University. He has articles in publications including the SIAM Journal of Scientific and Statistical Computing, the journal of Medical Decision Making, and the Y2K Advisor. These covered areas of probability networks, analytical distribution approximations, systems optimization, and automated software testing. He is a trained lead auditor in ISO 13485 for the Medical Device Industry and is an auditor in information systems. Bob enjoys his quality roles and is involved in improvements in professional, volunteer, and social settings.
