As you approach the building from the parking lot, there is a pedestrian walkway (bridge) to the left of the flag poles. Take this walkway into the side entrance and proceed down the long hall until you reach a secured turnstile. This is where we will meet. There is an empty reception desk and a small seating area. Allow time to get here from the parking lot, it is approximately ¼ mile depending on where you park.
Special Instructions: Attendees are required to wear closed toe and close heel shoes for safety reasons. You will do a lot of walking.
Event Information: Come tour one of AAR’s five U.S. aircraft maintenance facilities. The facility in Indianapolis is one of the largest at 1.1 million square feet and can accommodate up to 19 commercial aircraft. Heavy maintenance inspections, aircraft modifications, upgrades, and refurbishment are completed on Boeing, Airbus, and Embraer aircraft for a variety of airline and leasing companies. Topic: Basics of Monte Carlo Simulation in Quality and Reliability Applications

This presentation will cover the use of Monte Carlo simulation in engineering applications. The application are numerous including tolerance stack-up, process variation, stochastic process, reliability, safety risk analysis and many more. Monte Carlo simulation can provide decision makers an improved analysis tool compared to single point estimate methods by providing a quantitative view all outcomes including the extremes with probabilities of occurrence. This presentation will cover the basics of Monte Carlo simulation and focus on design and process variation as frequent causes of quality and reliability problems. It will also demonstrate how to use an Excel spreadsheet to run a simple Monte Carlo simulation.

Speaker Bio: Andre Kleyner has 30 years of engineering, research, consulting, and managerial experience specializing in reliability of electronic and mechanical systems designed to operate in severe environments. He received the doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from University of Maryland, and Master of Business Administration from Ball State University. Dr. Kleyner is Global Reliability Engineering Leader with Aptiv (formerly Delphi Electronics & Safety) and an adjunct professor at Purdue University. He is an ASQ Fellow, a CRE, CQE, and Six Sigma Black Belt. He also holds several US and foreign patents and authored multiple professional publications including three books on the topics of reliability, statistics, warranty management, and lifecycle cost analysis. Andre Kleyner is also the editor of the Wiley book Series in Quality and Reliability Engineering published by John Wiley & Sons.

Topic: Improving the Effectiveness of Visual Inspection

Despite the great strides in machine vision and error proofing methodologies, most manufacturing plants still rely on human visual inspection at various points in their process – especially for cosmetic appearance evaluation. Unfortunately, most production and quality engineers see visual inspection as a “black box” and do not know many of the factors of influence on visual inspection effectiveness. This also often leads to a failure to control the impact factors and to overestimate the potential effectiveness of visual inspection. Learn some of the basics of visual inspection and evaluate your quality engineering of this critical point in your process. Open discussion and participation welcome!

Speaker Bio:

Ted Schorn serves as Vice President, Quality and Technology, for Enkei America, Inc., a producer of aluminum alloy road wheels for automotive application. He has over 35 years of quality experience in automotive, medical and aerospace industries. Ted also serves as President of the Lean Network, Inc. a non-profit organization of Honda suppliers focused on improving their quality through Lean Manufacturing principles. Ted also operates his own consulting company, Schorn Consulting, LLC. He has published scores of technical and managerial papers and is a frequent conference speaker. He was awarded American Foundry Society’s Scientific Merit award for his work in visual inspection in 2008 and is an honorary lifetime member of the society for his Hoyt Memorial Lecture in 2005. AFS is publishing his book, Improving the Effectiveness of Visual Inspection, later this Spring. Ted is a certified Lead Assessor to IATF 16949 and ISO 14001, a Level III certified radiographer and a Senior member of ASQ.

Topic: Building Assurance: Building Quality into Capital Projects
It is projected that total global capital spend between 2014 and 2025 will be nearly $78 trillion. Worldwide spending for 2025 alone is projected to total $9 trillion. This significant increase in capital spending has and will continue to created significant stress in the construction industry. The construction industry is facing serious short falls in skilled labor to meet this demand and with a less skilled work force quality challenges continue to increase.

Capital projects by nature can be quite complex involving multiple engineering disciplines, contractors, vendors and key stakeholders. With these many groups involved in a project, managing quality can be very challenging and requires a disciplined approach by everyone involved. Owners often mistakenly assume expectations; specifications and drawings are being follow precisely by the contractors and vendors when actual practice has shown that contractor’s performance can be highly variable. The result can be delays in delivery or cost overruns or the owner gets a poorly constructed facility that simply does not perform as intended or the facility has hidden faults, which will ultimately result in increased maintenance for the owner. None of these impacts are positive for the owner.

Eli Lilly and Anova Technical Services partnered together a number of years ago to apply quality principles to the construction phase of Lilly’s capital projects. The intent was to improve the quality of the delivered facilities, reduce rework and bring projects in on schedule and on budget. This was done by partnering with contractors to apply quality practices, methods and tools throughout the construction phase of the projects. This approach was called Construction Quality Assurance, CQA.

This presentation will share the story of how Lilly and Anova applied a Construction Quality Assurance program to a $90 million pharmaceutical project in Indianapolis. Bruce Beck and Tim Isle will share approaches, methods and learning points gained from this project as well as other projects that have used the CQA approach.
Anyone who is involved in a capital project for their company needs to ask this simply question, ““How is the project team implementing quality principles to ensure quality output?” The answer can be quite telling regarding the probability of project success.

Speakers: Bruce Beck and Tim Isle
Bruce Beck served as a Director of Engineering for Eli Lilly and Company. During his 34-year career at Lilly he had roles in Technical Services, Manufacturing, Environmental Health and Safety and Engineering. In his last role at Lilly, he led a corporate group responsible for developing the Lilly Commissioning and Qualification program. This group also led the implementation of this program throughout the world for all new Lilly facilities. During this time, he also created the Lilly approach to Construction Quality Assurance (CQA), as well as an extensive project information management (PIM) program used on all new Lilly facility projects.

He has a Masters degree in Chemical Engineering from the Ohio State University and a Bachelors degree in Chemistry from Asbury University. He has authored articles on Construction Quality Assurance in magazines such as Pharmaceutical Engineering, The Chemical Engineer Today, and Quality Progress.

Today he is the president and founder of The Essentials Group, LLC (theessentialsgroup.net) that provides consulting for a variety of organizations. He is passionate about helping leaders reach their potential both individually and as a team. He has written a book, The Essentials of Leadership, that will be published in the fall of 2017.

Tim Isle is president of Anova Technical Services in Indianapolis. He is a graduate of Indiana State University and completed Advanced Project Management training at the University of Texas in Austin, TX. He has more than 30 years of experience in construction and as a construction consultant and has Managed some of the largest capital programs in the state of Indiana.

Speaker: Eric Gasper brings a rich background of technical and business analysis, web development, consulting, and team leadership to his role as product development specialist for PQ Systems. Experience in laboratory and office environments has given him a unique perspective on a variety of technical problems as well as insight into customers’ unique challenges. Eric holds a bachelor’s degree in management information systems from the University of Dayton, where he garnered experience with the university’s famed Research Institute prior to entering the work force as a business analyst and development specialist in pharmaceuticals for a major consulting company. In his role at PQ Systems, he has led regularly-scheduled technical seminars, offered gage R&R / MSA workshops at the 2013, 2014, and 2016 Inspection Division Conference sponsored by the American Society for Quality (ASQ), and presented a session on “Better Gage Management” at the 2013 Quality EXPO. Recent consultancy clients include Harley Davidson, Alcoa Howmet, DANA Corporation, Crown Cork & Seal, Eaton, Carpenter Technology, Spraying Systems, and Whirlpool.

Are you just interested in seeing how to use the tool, not being immersed in the theory behind it? If so, this webinar is for you.

Statistical Process Control is one of the “Basic Seven” quality tools. It is sometimes referred to as “Control Charts”, or even “Shewhart Charts”, after Walter Shewhart who initially described the technique while working at Western Electric Company. While SPC depends on statistical theory for its operation, it can be, and frequently is, applied with nothing more sophisticated than a piece of graph paper and a four-function calculator. This 90 minute webinar, “Statistical Process Control Fundamentals” provides a brief, painless and uncomplicated introduction to how SPC works and how it is used to improve processes. No statistical theory. No advanced math. Just the bare essentials.

Harry Rowe spent almost forty years working for a Fortune 100 manufacturing company, with assignments in Engineering and Construction, Computer Systems, R&D, Quality, and Product Development in businesses ranging from alumina refining and aluminum smelting to aluminum and plastic packaging to custom engineer-to-order machinery. After retiring, he founded Rowe Quality Services, hoping to help small and medium businesses improve their bottom lines by improving product and service quality and process performance. He has served as the Voice of the Customer Chair for ASQ Section 0903 in Indianapolis since 2011. He was a member of ASQ’s Voice of the Customer Committee from January 2013 and its Chair from January 2015 until stepping down from the Committee in August 2016. He is an ASQ Certified Manager of Quality and Organizational Excellence. Harry holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. He resides in Indianapolis with his wife Susie.
